Beyond Boardrooms
Welcome to our project! A growing number of European countries adopt corporate boardroom quota’s to ensure a more equal representation of women in leadership positions. How do quota’s impact inequality between men and women beyond the leadership of large enterprises? We create a new data infrastructure linking administrative data and surveys to map out multiple pathways how the impact of quota’s trickle down within organizations and spill over within the business community.
The project ‘Beyond Boardrooms: The Impact of Corporate Quota on Gender Equality in Organizations’ addresses in what ways quota schemes impact gender equality. We answer this question in three subprojects:
(1) how quotas impact women’s access to corporate leadership positions
(2) to what degree the impacts trickle down to inequality between men and women and occupational sex segregation
(3) to what degree the impacts spill over across organizations We consider the impact of two quota regulations, the corporate diversity target (2013–2020) and corporate quota (2022–2024).

NIDIO - Netherlands Integrated Data Infrastructure of Inequality in Organizations

NIDIO is an open-source code infrastructure and data manual assisting with the use of Dutch administrative register data. It is built around administrative data provided by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in the Microdata Services Remote Access Environment (RA). NIDIO facilitates the study of organizational inequality by integrating various administrative source data into a harmonized three-level data structure (organizations, individuals, and jobs). NIDIO helps to reconstruct workers’ demographic profiles and employment outcomes (e.g., wages) and links them to organizational characteristics. NIDIO adresses challenges that are commonly encountered while working with linked employer-employee register data. First, preparing and linking administrative data sources involves several decision-making steps that often remain undisclosed in published research. NIDIO provides transparent data processing routines that improve the reproducibility of completed analyses. Second, users with limited prior experience working with linked employer-employee register data face high startup barriers during project setup. NIDIO eases time- and labor-intensive data processing by providing tailor-made and customizable installation tools. Third, translating administrative data into social science concepts and measures is a nontrivial task. NIDIO provides guidelines and best practices to bridge the gap between administrative and scientific data.

Netherlands Integrated Database of Inequality in Organizations (NIDIO)
For the purpose of Beyond Boardrooms and future studies on organizational and labor inequality, we constructed the Netherlands Integrated Database of Inequality in Organizations (NIDIO). NIDIO is a unique code infrastructure to construct analyzable datasets by processing and combining different Statistics Netherlands administrative register and survey datasets about employees and firms.
